I know I'm a little late on the beginning of the year update. A lot has happened since June 2014 and even more has happened in just the last two months!
Now I know I'm REALLY late with this post but I honestly couldn't make up my mind for a while on who deserved to be on this list.
It's been about six months since I last posted and I wanted to compare my last post with where I am now.
It's that time of year where everyone starts to list off their top ten favorite ____ of 2013. I've seen a few renditions of Top Ten Albums of 2013 so I thought I'd post my version.
As 2013 comes to a close, I have been reflecting back on everything that has happened in the past year...
Their debut album, An Awesome Wave, may have come out almost six months ago but I've hopped back on that Alt-J train again. The album was a big hit in my head when it came out and it still is to this day. My friend Ashley told me to listen to them because "they sound like Temper Trap and ___ combined", which is seriously the perfect description for them. Joe Newman's voice sounds VERY similar to Dougy Mandagi, Temper Trap's singer. They sound like Temper Trap, but are more quirky. I love weird, so I immediately fell in love.
Fun fact: Alt-J is also known as ∆. When you hit the keys alt-J on a Mac computer it creates the "∆" symbol.
"Tessellate" is such a sexy song and I could listen to it on repeat for hours...trust me, I've done it multiple times. The lyrics in that song are so seductive. 99% sure the song is about sex and possibly a love triangle situation. The best line in the whole album are in this song: "Triangles are my favorite shape. Three points where two lines meet. Toe to toe, back to back, let's go, my love; it's very late. Til morning comes, let's tessellate." It's even better when you hear those words in Newman's voice so just listen to it and you'll understand.
"Breezeblocks" has been on the radio pretty much since the album came out and I 100% approve. "Interlude 2" is a beachy lullaby that I could fall asleep to every night. I just picture Alt-J sitting around a bonfire singing this song with those waves in the background as I fall asleep in the sand. "Fitzpleasure" was the song that stuck out to me the most when I first gave the album a listen. The beginning is so simple, then all the instruments come in and I just get the biggest smile on my face. It's so unique and different, it makes me want to dance around the office. The album makes a nice exit with the soft melodies of "Hand-Made". Overall I would give the album:
Also, you should spare the 15ish minutes to listen to Alt-J's Spotify Sessions.
Disclaimer: I suck at trying to describe music in words so I apologize if this is not up to your standards. These music posts are really just to tell you what music I enjoy a lot or don't really enjoy at all. I'm better at describing music through dance. If you know me personally, I'll explain each artist with interpretive dance. Contact me to set up an appointment.
